Emma WR - Proprietor
Involved with horses all my life, I established Woodpecker stables during the 1990’s. I am a fully insured BHS Stage 4 Senior Coach in Complete Horsemanship and I am on the British Horse Society register of instructors www.bhs.org.uk. I am also fully trained and up to date with First Aid, DBS and Child Protection. I hold a degree from Nottingham Trent University in Equine Sport Science and made the national papers a few years ago with my dissertation on whether or not some horses developed S.A.D. over the winter months! I have brought on several horses and evented up to Pre-Novice as well as competing in open team chasing, although since having 2 children I tend to play things a little safer now! The children are keen to follow in my competition shoes so we are often at local shows enjoying them winning a few ribbons!
I also regularly teach and get a lot of pleasure supporting all different levels of clients with their horses seeing them develop and becoming successful in their ambitions.
The stables are not just a business but a home too and I have greatly enjoyed building it up, from a few boxes with sparse facilities that I started with to the smart stabling, paddocks and recuperation centre it has now become. We are constantly improving and updating our facilities to offer the very best service as well as making sure all our clients and their horses are 100% happy.
Gil Riley (Cert EP MRCVS) - Vet
Married to Emma, Gil graduated from Vet College in Ireland at the start of the 90’s and has worked in Horse Practice in England since 1997, winning the Petplan Equine Vet of the Year award in 2009. He is a partner at Pool House Equine Clinic in Fradley and has a particular interest in lameness, both in the performance and less-challenged horse! Gil is on hand to examine and advise on any of the horses under our care whenever necessary.
Lisa Kirkham - Yard Staff
Lisa brings a wealth of experience to Woodpecker, having worked for the Edgars and travelled all over Europe with International Show Jumpers. She also worked for members of the British Show jumping team (Whitakers, David Broome, Nick Skelton) and was at the Barcelona Olympics. One of her proudest achievements was seeing her home produced mare Lottie compete at the Junior European Championships which resulted in her being sold to the USA. Lisa now lives in Dale Abbey village and keeps busy providing freelance grooming in the local area for long standing clients. She enjoys riding her horse "Heath" and has a great interest in racing, being a regular punter at Cheltenham!
Charlotte Maltby has worked at Woodpecker for a number of years and she is a full time student at Brackenhurst, Nottingham Trent University working towards her Equine degree. She owns a TB x Welsh sec.D “Bonnie” and enjoys One Day Event competitions.
Beth Freer is our newest member of staff. Beth successfully completed her studies at Broomfield Collage after leaving school and has since gained valuable experience at a large riding school and competition yard in Leicester. Joining the Woodpecker team in 2018, she is aiming to go on to achieve her Stage 2 BHS Complete Horsemanship. In her time off, Beth enjoys training and competing her horse “Drifter” in dressage and jumping.
